When you start diving into the big and slightly intimidating world of makeup it can be a job to know what products to pick up first. What are the basics? Should I invest in high-end products? What does that product do? The list goes on. Well, to help put an end to these continuous questions I’ve made a list of affordable products that don’t skimp on quality and are great for beginners.
The key to an even coverage is a good hydrating primer. It’s arguably still an underrated product but it really shouldn’t be. A good primer will help increase the lasting time of your face products throughout the day so it’s well worth using, especially during hot seasons. Of course not all primers will work for your skin type so it’s a little trial and error but here are a few favourites to consider:
Whether you’re looking for a natural or totally glammed up look, foundation can make a huge difference. I personally love a medium to high coverage and I have a whole page dedicated to my shade range in case you may be struggling to find your match and have a similar skin type. There are so many amazing foundations from high-street brands so consider exploring a few. Some great ones to start with are:
To camouflage any skin imperfections and brighten under the eyes, just dab a little concealer and blend out. It’s a simple step but very effective. I also love cleaning up the brows with a little cream concealer but that’s just personal choice. Some fabulous cheap concealers include:
A little bit of bronzer can really bring some warmth back into your face, something I absolutely love when applying my makeup. Particularly ideal for Summer but be warned you really want to keep an eye on blending because no one looks good with bulky brown lines on their cheekbones. Blend that beauty out!
L’Oreal Back To Bronze
Admittedly blush is one product I don’t feel the need to use in every look but I do a bit of colour every now and then. Cream products are becoming more and more popular but for ease, I’d say powders are the way to go. For some added rosiness give these a go:
Rimmel Lasting Finish Blush
Bourjois Little Round Pot
After all those products it would be a shame not to lock it all down. For some added lasting power lightly brush some powder over your face, particularly concentrating on the T-zone to keep natural oils at bay. Powder can also be lightly reapplied throughout the day to take away that unwanted shine. Some great translucent powders to try:
A little shimmer can make your cheekbones pop and everyone is obsessed. Use a small brush and be careful not to go crazy because you only need a little to look beautiful when the light catches that angle.
Revolution Pro Supreme Highlighter
Revolution Skin Kiss
There’s a huge variety of brow products on offer right now but not are all easy to use from the get-go. When starting to tackle your brows, try a thin pencil to fill in or if you’re blessed with naturally thick brows, invest in a brow gel. Some pencils I love include:
NYX Micro Brow Pencil
Soap and Glory Archery Brow
I bloody love an eyeshadow palette and they are so addictive. Thankfully there’s some amazing palettes in Boots and Superdrug stores that still offer great colour payoff without the huge price tag. You can create endless looks with these beauties:
A product that can cause so much frustration when it doesn’t go right. Practice certainly makes perfect no matter what formula you try out. Thankfully these two particular liners are amazing to use, especially when you aren’t great at perfecting that wing.
NYX Super Skinny Eye Marker
NYX Super Fat Eye Marker
Doesn’t mascara just complete an eye look? I love that boost of volume and length a mascara provides and good mascaras are popping up everywhere for such great prices.
I say lipstick because I’m not huge on glosses but that’s up to you. I don’t know about you, but I like a lipstick that doesn’t need to be reapplied constantly throughout the day and won’t disappear when I eat. These have your back:
NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream
Lottie London Slay All Day
Lock it down and put your trust into a good setting spray. Your makeup won’t be disappearing regardless of how hot you feel throughout the day. Although my fave will always be the slightly pricier All Nighter by Urban Decay, I have also found and fell for a few cheapies:
NYX Dewy Finish
Revolution Pro Supreme Hold
Tools and Brushes
My huge collection of brushes started with just a handful of Real Technique brushes and I still use some of them now. Not only affordable but easy to use and you can find sets everywhere. A little tip, take a look in your local TKMaxx for this particular brand, you can find a few surprising bargains. It’s also no news that I like to use a damp sponge for blending out my foundation. I still swear by my beloved Beauty Blender but the Real Technique’s Miracle Complexion Sponge is a great product to try.
