A Week Without Skincare Or Makeup Products

June 12, 2018 2 Comments

If you told me a couple of months ago that I would go without makeup or skincare for a whole week, I’d be laughing uncontrollably. There’s just no way I would’ve done that and that’s purely all down to my low confidence. So why the sudden change? As much as I’d love to say that I woke up one day and thought f*** it I’m confident in my own skin and promptly left the house, that’s just not the case at all. With stress taking its toll at the beginning of May I basically just gave up for a bit. I wasn’t feeling great on the inside and I wasn’t going to spend time and effort making up for it on the outside. As it turns out this became an unexpected detox and one that I appreciated. Needless to say I neglected my face for the week and made a whole lot of discoveries.

Emotional benefits
Something that I realised pretty quickly is that I gave more attention to my insecurities than anyone else did. Stating the obvious right? The point is I had anticipated comments on my lack of makeup on the spot the size of Everest on my chin or the large bags under my eyes. Whether people didn’t notice or were just too polite to comment, I really appreciated it and started to feel more comfortable particularly in my work environment. I wouldn’t go all out and say my confidence is at an all time high, but after a couple of days I didn’t even give my bare face a second thought.

Physical benefits
Now I know a lot of people may thinks it’s gross having not used any skincare products but I felt this challenge was necessary for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that I don’t in all honesty know what I’m putting on my face and I know you have probably been guilty of this too. Have you ever read the small print on those little bottles, looked at the ingredients and not had a clue what they are? We can barely pronounce them at times but we still slap them on and hope for the best. Isn’t that a little scary? I felt my skin could do with a break from unknown chemicals so I put all my trust into warm water instead.

The other reason for this break was to rediscover my skin’s needs. I’ve gone from oily to dry to combo and back again and I just couldn’t keep up. I had no clue what products would work for me anymore. After a week I’ve found some areas that needed more attention and other areas that actually didn’t really need that extra bit of help from a lotion or mask etc. It was a real eye opener and one that I think you would benefit from too.

So now that the week is over, I have come to a few conclusions. One is that I actually appreciate the extra time in the mornings, not to sleep but to do a little more writing, plan my day better and it’s less to worry about when I’m at the gym.

I definitely enjoy not having to take my makeup off when I’m half asleep. This is a great bonus after a long day, but my biggest discovery is that a break is good for your skin. It balances out naturally and you learn more about how to adapt your skincare routine. I’m certainly going to be trying out some all-natural products to see how differently they take affect. And yes I will still be indulging in makeup just not as often and this isn’t due to low confidence but the creativeness and enjoyment from using beauty products.

Would you go without products for a week?
